Software Anbti-Piracy

Pirated copies of commercial software are given away on the internet, costing software companies millions of dollars each year. Even with software "protection schemes", the software pirates post methods of getting around legal registration and thus are able to use the software.

Digital Security Co. offers two services relating to software piracy and the protection of your firm’s assets. We have had tremendous success with other clients who are also software publishers, lowering the number of "offerings" of their software from dozens each week to sometimes only one every few weeks.

  1. Piracy Monitoring: Digital Security monitors the dozens of software piracy newsgroups (known as "warez" groups) for mentions of a particular software product. Each month we send a report indicating which newsgroups were monitored, any postings of the client software, and the screen name of the person posting it. If a crack is posted for the software we will download the crack, put it on a floppy and send it with our monthly report.

  2. Pirate Identity Tracking: Software pirates never post their real name or location on the warez newsgroups and are thus not easily located in the anonymity of the internet. This service consists of minimally determining the source of the posting, i.e., the name of the Internet Service Provider (ISP) being used by the pirate and enough information (date and time of posting, message number, etc.) that the ISP can take further action. All of this information is turned over to the client so they may follow up.

In some cases it is possible to encourage the ISP to provide the actual name and address of their subscriber posting the pirated software without having to file suit. This information is also provided to our client if we are able to obtain it.
